Time for a little bit of maths now You´ve probably noticed that no ds1 uses all the dt1s in the level type, in fact most only use tiles from a few files. Since it would be unnecessary to always load all the dt1s for each single ds1, there´s a value in lvlprest.txt telling which of the dt1s that are listed in lvltypes.txt under a certain level type are actually used for a specific ds1. Open up lvlprest.txt scroll down till you find the row that belongs to the ds1 that you want to modify (check with Ds1edit if you´re unsure), then scroll to the right till you reach the Dt1mask column.
The number in there is a sum of powers of 2 and it tells which of the columns in lvltypes.txt are relevant for the ds1. In lvltypes.txt, the first column (File 1) has a value of 2^0, the second (File 2) is 2^1, the third 2^2 and so on until File 31 which is 2^30. The Dt1Mask value is now the sum of all the values of the columns used. And example: Say you want to use the dt1s listed under File2, File3 and File10 for a certain .ds1. Then your Dt1Mask value would be:
2^1 (File2) + 2^2 (File3) + 2^9 (File10) = 518
So, if you have added a new dt1 to a level type, calculate the new Dt1mask value and enter it in lvlprest.txt. Note: Some ds1 files aren´t listed in lvlprest.txt, in that case check lvlsub.txt. Save the file and put it into patch_d2.mpq / your folders again.
