What is a Forest?
A forest is a big area with a lot of trees standing densely to each other on forest ground.
Different animals (deers, foxes, and so on) live in a forest.
You can also find a lot of different smaller plants in the forest. There you can also find a lot of bushes and of different kinds of grass.
The Functions of the Forest
1. for the economy
The forest supplies wood which is used everywhere in economy (for example building industry, furniture factories, ship building industry, etc.). We also get meat and fruit to eat.
2. for the environment
Ground Protection:
The forest protects the ground against wind and water. That is in scientific terms erosion of the earth’s surface.
Avalanche-Protection:
The forest stops avalanches.
In the mountains forests are planted to avoid the risk of avalanches in winter.
Water Circulation:
The trees and bushes keep the water near under the surface of the wood. The rain is filtered. When there is enough water under the surface, the water moves to the ground water.
Climatic Protection:
Towns and villages which are close to a forest profit from better air because of the production of oxygen by photosynthesis.
Protection against Noise:
Loud noises like the sound of an highway are absorbed by the forest. They can’t get through it to the town or village.
3. Recover-Functions
A lot of people get into the forest when they want to relax and to recover. The forest is a piece of total nature.
4. Special-Functions
The forest changes the countryside.
The forest protects a lot of animals.
Forest in Germany
In Germany an area of 10.9 million hectar are covered by woods. The highest share of forests in Germany can be found in Brandenburg. Schleswig-Holstein is the region in Germany with (in percent of the land)
42 percent of Hessen is covered by forest. Thats 8 percent of the forest in Germany.
The dominating tree is the red-beech(Rot-Buche). The trees in Hessen are older than the trees in other parts of Germany.
In Germany we have 90 different kinds of trees and bushes. In former time the biggest part of the forest consisted of beeches and oaks. But nowadays there are 4 types of trees that dominate the forest. This developpement started a few years ago. These trees are the oak (Eiche), the beech (Buche), the pine (Kiefer) and the spruce (Fichte).
150 years ago new trees were planted in the German forest. The red-oak and the douglasie from North-America.
The beech
The beech can get 40 metres high and 900 years old. It has also got very long roots that get in contact with the roots of the other beeches around it. Thus the roots of the beeches at one place build a network.
The wood of the beech is strong but extremely elastic. A beech does not break in a storm.
The oak
It can get 50 metres high. It has a big crown of leaves.
The pine
A pine can get 40 metres high. The staff of a pine does not have much branches. The needles get 4-8 cm long and are blue-green.
The spruce
The spruce can get 60 metres high. It has 4-cornered Needles. It blooms in April and May.
The ripe (reif) cones (Zapfen) hang down.
