Talking about spam... Is there a DVD-Set with Monty Python's Flying Circus in english with german subtitles?

Of course one should watch the english version always, not the translated german, but sometimes you simply don't understand a word they are talking so subtitles help a lot.

I want to buy a nice present for someone.

I don't think so. That's not a Word-By-Word-Subtitle. Subtitles are shorter than the text passage. Many of DVDs are in english funnier. The jokes have another, higher quality and you are not able to get them right in german.

That is why it is a good thing to preserve the English dialogues, but to have subtitles in order to actually grasp the jokes.

I originally come from Flensburg and grew up more or less bilingual with Danish. One advantage of living so close to the border was the possibility of watching Danish TV. As dubbing is expensive they usually went for subtitles for all the movies, and I would say it helped my English a lot. I freely admit though that even nowadays in every movie I go to over here in the UK I have to ask my accompagnying seat neighbour "What did that character just say?" several times.

My next task for New Year is to introduce people here to "Dinner for one" as - believe it or not - this sketch as well as the actors are completely unknown over here.

Yep, agree with you on that one. Some shows have great subs, but often they are too abridged and get the puns all messed up. Reading at the pace of talking would just be too hard after a while. I prefer watching comedies without subs and really enjoying them, getting al the intended jokes. But I am sure there are versions that are dubbed in german for the german buyers as well.

Thats absolutely ok. Monty Python is sometimes extreme british humor, that harldy anybody gets. Some of my australian friends would every know and then not get certain jokes either. Its just the culture that many watchers do not know, hence cannot understand the puns created by the writers.
When you ever watch jackie brown... do not do it in english, its almost impossible to understand everything
